We are pleased to introduce the inaugural cohort of the Oasis Mentorship Program, launched this fall as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting Black immigrants in navigating the educational and career landscape in Canada. This program aims to bridge the gap between academic and professional success, by providing our mentees with the guidance, resources, and networks they need to thrive in their chosen fields.
Our first cohort represents a group of highly motivated individuals who bring a diverse range of academic backgrounds, professional aspirations, and lived experiences. These individuals have taken the first steps toward building their careers, and we are excited to support them as they transition from graduates to emerging leaders in their respective fields.
A Diverse and Ambitious Group
The mentees in this cohort are recent graduates from programs in business, healthcare, technology, and the arts, to name just a few. Each participant brings a unique perspective, grounded in both their academic training and their experiences as Black immigrants in Canada.
We are proud to highlight individuals like Charles, who is passionate about product design and aims to leverage his skills to help businesses make beautiful and accessible websites. Osaheni, a law graduate from Nigeria,  brings her entrepreneurial spirit, with plans to launch her own privacy-based tech startup. Jane, with a background in communications, seeking to grow both personally and professionally in her field.
These mentees exemplify the talent, determination, and drive that this program seeks to nurture. Their diverse experiences and goals reflect the breadth of opportunity that exists in Canada’s professional landscape, and we are committed to helping them realize their full potential.
Mentorship: A Pathway to Success
The core of our Mentorship Program is the pairing of each mentee with a seasoned mentor—an experienced professional who understands the complexities of the Canadian job market and is dedicated to supporting the growth and development of our mentees. Our mentors have built successful careers in industries ranging from finance and technology to social work and law. Their role is to offer guidance, share insights, and provide the kind of practical advice that only comes from lived experience.
We believe that mentorship is a critical component of success, particularly for Black immigrants who face additional challenges in establishing their careers in Canada. This program is designed to create an environment where mentees feel supported, empowered, and confident in their ability to succeed.
Building Lasting Connections
While the primary goal of this program is career development, we are equally focused on fostering meaningful, long-term connections between mentors and mentees. These relationships are intended to extend beyond professional advice, offering a network of support that can provide both personal and career-related guidance.
In the coming months, our cohort will participate in one-on-one mentorship sessions, group workshops, and networking events, all designed to equip them with the skills and connections they need to navigate the complexities of the Canadian job market. We are confident that these experiences will help them build not only successful careers but also a community of peers and mentors committed to their ongoing development.
Looking to the Future
The launch of this program marks a significant milestone for our organization, and we are excited to see how our first cohort will grow and thrive in the months ahead. As we continue to expand this initiative, we look forward to welcoming future cohorts and providing even more opportunities for Black immigrants to excel in their chosen fields.
We extend a warm welcome to the Fall 2024 cohort, and we are honored to be part of their journey. We look forward to celebrating their successes and supporting them every step of the way.
For those interested in joining future cohorts, or for professionals who would like to become mentors, please stay connected with us. Together, we can continue to empower the next generation of leaders.
